Mental Dynamic
A documentary about a street music band
music gathered them
Back in 2018, when this documentary was filmed, music in Iran faced many restrictions. Live performances in the streets were forbidden, and female singing was officially banned. Still, from time to time, passionate musicians took the risk and played for people in public spaces.
One of these groups was Mental Dynamic. They not only started performing in the streets, but also included a female singer in their band. Together, they covered and performed English songs—something that had never been done in Shiraz before.

My Creative Concern
A street music band began performing songs that had never before been played in public spaces in my city Shiraz/Iran. Their presence drew large crowds, as people gathered to hear something new and unexpected on the streets.
My Perspective
My perspective went beyond their street performances. I explored the dynamics within the group, their relationships, the struggles they encountered, and the uncertainties they faced. By following them for a year, I aimed to capture not just the music, but the destiny of the band itself.
The Results
This documentary was never granted permission to be released, as the Iran; prohibited street music performances. It was therefore produced and shown illegally, screened only in private spaces. Despite these restrictions, the film became an inspiration for other young artists who were passionate about covering and performing English-language songs in public. From that time on, people in Shiraz began to encounter musicians performing non-Persian music in corners of the city — a movement that was warmly welcomed by the public.
